Oliver Desbarres Professional Experience
I worked for 15 years for two major investment banks. In my last role in Singapore, between August 2011 and October 2012, I was a Director and Head of Asia-Pacific FX Strategy. I was responsible for formulating and marketing, both internally and to our institutional clients, currency and regional views and trade recommendations on all Emerging Asian currencies (CNY, INR, IDR, KRW, MYR, PHP, SGD, THB and TWD) and AUD and NZD. I marketed intensively in Australasia, Europe and America.
My team was the focal point in Asian time for G10 Research and conducted its own G10 macro analysis. More broadly, one of my roles was to sell the FX and Global Research franchise to Sales and clients, both in Asia and our other key centres. My team was ranked by a number of institutions and in a number of polls. I participated regularly in high-profile Barclays events and presentations and I was a guest host on CNBC TV. I was also a regular participant on CNBC TV 18, Bloomberg, Reuters TV and Channel News Asia and was frequently quoted in the written press.
Prior to that in London, between August 1998 and May 2008, I was the macro-economist, rate and FX strategist for Emerging Europe (including the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Croatia, Romania, Slovakia and Turkey), Africa (including Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Tunisia and South Africa) and Middle East (including Saudi Arabia and Israel). My role also included coverage of the G10 currencies during London trading hours and I wrote extensively on EU accession and the UK interest rate market.
I worked as a summer intern for Credit Suisse in Moscow (fixed income) in summer 1997 and in London (Equity Capital Markets) in summer 1996. I also did a summer placement for the European Petroleum Industry Association in Brussels in September 1996.
